The politics of beer and sport

Forbes reports,
Bavarian politician Franz Maget received a great deal of publicity for describing Budweiser as "the worst beer in the world." Furthermore, he said, "We have a duty to public welfare and must not poison visitors to the World Cup." As word of mouth goes, it couldn't get much worse. A research report by Berlin-based Landau Media Monitoring points out that Budweiser is receiving the most negative coverage of all sponsors in the German media.

"it's brown-gold and alcoholic. . . but so is paint thinner..."

This is the overloaded symbol par excellence of US involvement. Classic bull-in-china-shop. It would be especially nice to hear about any acts of outrage at the beer booth.

The people who support this decision as "marketplace reporters" are exactly like beltway journalists, whose articles are the verbal and ethical equivalent of an oh-so-wobbly soapbar getting repeatedly dropped in the showers, with the hope that some might notice these slippery-fingered writers and their "fair and equitable", "he-said, she-said" treatment of the issue. Under the circumstances, its so steamy in there, how could anyone report on the issue without bobbling it?

Sorry for the off-color analogy, and non-sports-related discussion. But its really a bother to me.

The Green Cobra despises shoddy journalists as much we hate mongeese. For the record we also dislike spending thousands of dollars to fly to Gelsenkirchen only to find the same beer we have in our fridge at home.

The most interesting justification Ponturo gives for monopolizing in-venue beer distribution is choice and option. Continuing your racy theme, MWB, it sounds like the time the Blue Panther told us he, "had to sleep with that girl to see if she was a virgin." Oh, maybe that's a story for another post.

Regardless, Ponturo's light beer argument isn't likely to sway many Germans.
